Other Side of the Wall
OVerview
An audiovisual experience, Other Side of the Wall offers you the chance to look into the aural lives of others, and through that experience make connections between the daily sounds of those around us and our own. We rarely have or make the time to slow down and listen in everyday life, and so we have made a space where that is possible; not a space for meditation, but a space in which to be confronted by the reassuring notion that even in the most divisive of times, we share so much in the things we see and hear every day of our lives.

Experience
A dimly-lit space with walls of string and delicate light invites you in with the sounds of the everyday – the whirr of a washing machine, the clink of glasses in the cupboard, the sweep of a broom. Out of the collage of sounds, strains of a string quartet emerge and dissipate, blurring the line between instrument and object. A wall of string invites you to touch, feel, and explore. A chance encounter with a string, only lightly brushed, may set off a chain reaction in the room; it suddenly fills with light, or catches your ear with a previously unheard sound (NOT NEEDED) . And in an instant, your phone – which feeds you information about the state of the world, the state of your friends, work colleagues, family – presents a cryptic image for you to decipher. Other Side of the Wall invites you to sit, think, interact, and be moved by the immensity and sublimity of the everyday, and to take those feelings with you as you sit on the tube, walk through the park, or slide your key into the lock of your front door.
Other Events
As well as creating a full-room installation which will run for a week in June, we are supporting the experience of Other Side of the Wall with a few other events.
April 14th: Restrospective Exhibition
Subpatch will be exhibiting all of our major works to date at the Royal Academy of Music in Marylebone, where you can experience A Well-Played Game, Ghirlanda Sacra: Regnum Mundi, and the first panel of Other Side of the Wall. At this unique exhibition, you won’t just sit and watch, but rather participate in all of these experiences, and learn a little about what we do.
May 3rd: Preview String Quartet Concert
At Millfield Place in Hampstead, our Quartet collaborators for the installation will be performing standard repertoire, compositions by the members of Subpatch, and a specially-composed piece for Other Side of the Wall.
If you have any questions about these events, please feel free to get in touch.
